We had a birthday in the family last week, the smallest one turned three!
The passing of the years seems like such a big deal when they are so little, when she turned from one to two it was a goodbye to the baby years and hello to the toddler years. I generally think of three as being more preschooler than toddler but she’s still literally toddling around so a toddler it is for the time being.
When her big sister Seren turned three, it was her first birthday after Imogen was born so we wanted to make a fuss. We went to Peppa Pig World at Paultons Park and she had a fairly big party with a bouncy castle and face painter. It obviously made a big impression as Seren has been telling Imogen that when she is 3 she would get to go to Peppa Pig World! So we ended up back there at the beginning of May. We booked a whole weekend this time and got to see more of Paultons Park and, though I was slightly dreading it, we all had a great time.
Whereas her big sister had had such fixed ideas about what she wanted for her third birthday party, Imogen was more relaxed. We decided to choose one of her books for inspiration, starting out with the The Gruffalo but ended up settling for an Alice in Wonderland birthday theme. We had a – suitably mad – party at home last weekend and fortunately had beautiful sunshine for a few hours, it seems to have rained ever since!
On the day itself, we had birthday pancakes for breakfast then Imogen went to playgroup as usual. Andy took the afternoon off and Imogen loved having us to herself for a few hours. We went to a little toy exhibition near us, to Pizza Express for ice-cream (they even popped a candle in and sang happy birthday!) and spent ages watching ducks and ducklings on the canal. The daddy duck was doing a fine job of scaring away the much bigger Canadian Geese – it was quite a performance to watch.
We ended the day with a birthday tea with grandparents and more cake.
So far being three has been about potty training (instigated by her). It’s also been lovely to see her speech develop over the last few months and more of her personality come through. She’s been a full on toddler with typical tantrums and hyperactive behaviour though that is starting to calm down now. I’m looking forward to the adventures we will have over the next year before she starts school!
