Canary Wharf, one of London’s premier business districts, famed for it’s shiny skyscrapers, has added a fun element for September in the form of the glamorous Idolize Spiegeltent which is currently taking up resident in Canada Square Park.
The schedule is packed with cabaret, acrobatics, comedy, music and kids’ events – something for everyone. We popped along last Friday to see soul singer ESKA who has been described as “the finest female vocalist in the UK” and as Jamie Cullum’s favourite female singer . She warmly welcomed the group of under 5’s and parents on the dance floor to sit closer to her and handed out sheets of A4 paper to us all. Not the obvious accompaniment to a sing-a-long session but we first used the paper as a drum, then made paper flowers to wave to a different song then tore the petals off and threw them in the air as if they were autumn leaves. Seren LOVED doing that and announced that someone would have to tidy up. Fortunately, not the audience!
Both the kids enjoyed listening to the songs and wandering around in equal measure, which was absolutely fine. I really enjoyed listening to Eska’s beautiful voice and found the hour-ish long session really relaxing.
The bar in the Spiegelgent is open throughout the session though we didn’t use it. After the performance we popped across the road to use the facilities in Waitrose and pick up some lunch for the girls. Andy and I got our lunch from the Wahaca truck in Canada Square and we sat down in the square to eat it before heading home. We had to get back to get sorted out for Seren’s birthday party but if we hadn’t been doing that I think we would have gone a couple of stops down on the DLR to Mudchute Farm for the afternoon.
The Spiegeltent is in residence until Sunday 20th and family events still to come include Boppin’ Bunnies, puppet show The Elves and the Shoemaker, Baby Bach and a family cabaret on Sunday.
See the Canary Wharf website for more details and to buy tickets. Visit ESKA’s website for tour dates and album info.
We were invited to the performance to review the event. All words and photos are my own.
